Stump the Chump

The Mystery of the Vibrating Furnace

Return to Story List

It was a seemingly ordinary scenario—an oil furnace, only one year old, causing an unexpected disruption. When the unit fired up, it vibrated so intensely that the floor above it shook. The furnace was connected to a masonry chimney in the center of the home, which appeared to be in good condition. After running through the usual checks, everything seemed in order. The unit fired correctly, and the readings were normal—except for one troubling issue: the persistent vibration.

The question lingered: What could be causing such an intense vibration in a furnace that was still practically new?

The first respondent with the correct answer will receive 1 CEU.
