BPI Seeks Public Comment on Revised Draft of BPI-1200 Standard 

Saratoga Springs, NY: The Building Performance Institute, Inc. (BPI) is inviting public input on a revised draft of BPI-1200, Standard Practice for Basic Analysis of Buildings. The draft is being released for a 45-day public comment period, with comments due November 9, 2026. 

The public review of BPI 1200, Standard Practice for Basic Analysis of Buildings, will also be announced in the September 25, 2026 edition of ANSI Standards Action. 

BPI-1200 establishes minimum criteria and procedures for conducting building science-based residential energy audits and related diagnostic testing. The standard addresses energy use as well as aspects of building durability, occupant comfort, health, and safety. It also establishes requirements for audit reports, including prioritized recommendations for improving home energy efficiency and addressing related health and safety, comfort, and building durability issues. 

Previously published as ANSI/BPI 1200-S-2017, BPI-1200 has served as a foundational standard for residential energy auditing and diagnostic testing. This is the first revision of BPI-1200 since 2017.  

The revised draft was developed and approved for public review by BPI’s Single Family Standards Technical Committee (SF-STC). The SF-STC is composed of subject matter experts representing a balance of interests and develops standards through BPI’s ANSI-accredited consensus process, which emphasizes openness, balance, transparency, and stakeholder participation. 

The revision reflects the SF-STC’s review of the existing standard and updates intended to ensure that BPI-1200 continues to provide clear, relevant requirements for residential energy assessments and associated diagnostic procedures. 

Following the public comment period, the SF-STC will review and consider all comments received in accordance with BPI’s ANSI-accredited standards development procedures.  

Once the standards development process is complete, the revised standard will be submitted to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Board of Standards Review (BSR) for review, with the intention of receiving approval as an American National Standard (ANS).
