Performance Matters -- E-Newsletter - October 2009

Responsible growth

We started 2009 with 70 training affiliate organizations. As of September 1st, we had 121, with 116 more in the process of becoming affiliates, and new inquiries coming in daily. Much of the interest is in locations where we did not have a presence before, like Alabama, Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota and even Hawaii. As the training affiliate network grows, so does our capacity to train and certify more home performance professionals.

The impetus behind this rapidly growing interest in training home performance professionals is, of course, largely thanks to the funding for weatherization and energy efficiency retrofits provided under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA)—$5 billion through the Weatherization Assistance Program and $3 billion for the State Energy Program.

Everyone wants in on the action, and many jurisdictions are scrambling to put an infrastructure in place to ramp-up weatherization assistance programs and expand or launch energy efficiency retrofit initiatives. Proper training to build competency and credentialing to ensure skills are in place are seen as prerequisites for success. It’s hardly surprising that BPI is seen as an ‘easy’ way to get programs up and running.

So we have growth. Rapid growth. The entire industry is expanding at an incredible rate. People are starting to understand and appreciate the economic, environmental and social benefits of improving the energy efficiency of America’s existing homes. But while we celebrate the fact that we’re finally getting some of the attention and respect we all know we deserve, we have to make sure that we manage this rapid growth responsibly.

We need to make sure that newcomers to the home performance industry comply with the same standards as the veterans. These standards are proven to produce results for homeowners—that’s precisely why directors are choosing to include BPI as part of their programs in the first place.

It is our responsibility to make sure the standards stay high, and that we strive for continuous improvement. Our mission is to Raise the bar in home performance contracting. Not every individual can be a BPI certified professional. Not every company can be a BPI accredited contractor. Not every training organization can be a BPI affiliate.

That’s why we’re working on developing some new standards. We’re also reviewing some of the tried-and-true standards to see where they can be improved. We won’t be relaxing. We won’t be lowering our expectations. We’re raising competency levels, adding new skills and adding new safeguards to ensure the right people get into this industry for the right reasons.

BPI has an important role to play as the home performance industry moves more into the mainstream. And you—our community of technicians, contractors, trainers and guides—can contribute by telling us how we can improve. Tell us how we can make the standards better. Tell us what is working in the field, and what isn’t. Tell us what’s missing. Tell us what should be protected.

This is indeed a time of massive, rapid growth. But as the saying goes, there’s no point in quantity without quality. The next few years may make or break the industry. If we get it right, we can flourish, become mainstream, help hundreds of thousands—even millions—of American families. If we get it wrong, we can damage our delicate reputation and shrink back into relative obscurity, even potentially never recover the respect we’ve recently gained.

Let’s make sure we get it right. Share your thoughts with us: info@bpi.org

It’s that time of year again...

It’s show season! Every fall and winter we hit the road to help raise awareness and educate the wider industry about the value of home performance contracting, as well as training, professional certification, company accreditation and quality assurance. Here’s an overview of some of the events we’ve participated in—or will be participating in—this fall.

Mile-High Home Performance—2009 Excellence in Building Conference and Expo
We just got home from Denver after three days working at this great event put on by the The Energy & Environmental Building Alliance (EEBA). The conference offered a range of educational opportunities and many of the sessions counted toward BPI CEUs.

BPI’s CEO, Larry Zarker, was a panelist for Rater Update!, along with EEBA Executive Director Kathleen Guidera, RESNET’s Steve Baden and Rick Davenport, Vice President - Building Science at MASCO Corporation.

In the exhibit hall, traffic was brisk at the BPI booth. And while we saw a lot of old friends who dropped by to say hello, a large proportion of the rest of the 550 event attendees seemed to converge on our space to ask how they could get certified, become an affiliate or incorporate BPI standards into their home performance incentive program.

Take Off, Eh?—Energy Retrofits for Houses: Affordable Comfort for Canadians
This brand new event will be held for the first time in Toronto, Ontario on October 28-29. Steve Tratt from ZERODRAFT®—Canada’s first BPI training affiliate organization—will be presenting two sessions: Air Sealing Multifamily Buildings and Making Money by Air Sealing & Insulating. 42 of the sessions at the event qualify for BPI CEUs.

The highlight will be BPI’s presentation of the Tony Woods Award for Excellence in Advancing the Home Performance Industry in Canada. Like its American counterpart, awarded for the first time in the United States in April, the Canadian award (Tony was, after all, Canadian) will be given to the individual who has most advanced the home performance industry, through dedication and activism, over the past year. Watch for an announcement of the winner in the next issue of Performance Matters!

Joining the HVAC Mainstream—2010 AHR Expo
BPI will be exhibiting at the 2010 AHR Expo in Orlando, Florida January 25-27, 2010. This event is one of the world’s largest HVAC trade shows, featuring more than 1,800 exhibiting companies, dozens of industry organizations and over 25,000 visitors from all 50 states and over 120 countries. Building Science Tech launches new DVD to prepare candidates for BPI Building Analyst exams

BPI trainers Glenn Dickey and Asa Foss have developed a 90-minute, BPI-recognized training video to help prepare candidates for the Building Performance Institute (BPI) Building Analyst and Envelope field examinations. To pass the BPI field exams you need to score a minimum of 70% on the overall exam, and 85% on the combustion safety and carbon monoxide testing modules.

The video provides and overview on:

  • Worst-case combustion safety testing of furnaces, boilers and water heaters
  • Blower door setup and air leakage testing (using Retrotec and Minneapolis blower doors)
  • Advanced pressure diagnostics
  • Indoor air quality and durability inspections
  • Making recommendations based on BPI standards

The video is designed to help BPI exam candidates and those training to become energy auditors. This training is targeted for people wanting to become home energy auditors. It is perfect for those who have taken an online or in person building science course and need an in-depth review of the diagnostics tests covered in the BPI Building Analyst or Envelope field examinations. We strongly recommend that trainees watch this video prior to taking the BPI written examination as well, since it visually demonstrates the core concepts of the exam.

This training will show residential professionals what is included in an energy audit, where energy efficiency problems arise in existing homes, and building science and energy efficiency best practices. Whether you're an architect, builder or realtor, you'll gain a new technical understanding of how to improve the efficiency of existing homes. This training qualifies you for 1.5 BPI CEUs.

Energy Trust of Oregon wins big with Home Energy Makeover contest

Four Oregon homeowners got to transform their energy hog homes into lean, mean, money-saving machines this summer, thanks to Energy Trust of Oregon, the local Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program sponsor.

More than 6,000 homeowners entered the contest. After interviewing 40 semi-finalists and evaluating the homes of 20 finalists, the four winners from Bend, Medford, Portland and Salem were chosen on June 15, 2009. Each winner will receive energy-saving home improvements valued at up to $25,000.

Visit www.HomeEnergyMakeoverOregon.org to meet the winners and hear their home performance stories.

DOE to Fund up to $454 Million for Retrofit Ramp-Ups in Energy Efficiency

On September 14, 2009, U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu announced a new $454 million program designed to catalyze a nationwide energy upgrade that experts estimate could save $100 million annually in utility bills for households and businesses. The Recovery Act's "Retrofit Ramp-Up" program will pioneer innovative models for rolling out energy efficiency to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses in a variety of communities. Much like past roll-outs for cable TV or the Internet, the Department of Energy (DOE) intends to create models that, when undertaken nationally, will save consumers billions of dollars on their utility bills and make the huge savings of energy efficiency available to everyone.

"Energy efficiency isn't just low-hanging fruit; it's fruit lying on the ground. We have the tools to reduce energy use at home and at work and to provide huge savings to families and businesses on their energy bills. But use of these technologies has been far too limited because we lack the simple and effective ways for people to access them," said Chu.

Joe’s Marketing Corner

Let’s review some basics

I talk to home performance people wherever I go. Seems folks are still struggling with one fundamental question: how do we sell energy efficiency retrofits?

My simple answer (heck, my constant refrain for the last few decades): we don’t sell energy efficiency, we sell comfortCOMFORT! The energy efficiency is free!

Oh sure, we’ll getThere will always be a certain percentage of your some calls from a few people who understand that we all need to reduce our impact on the environment. Thanks to all the public attention on “gGreen” and the incentives floating around these days, we’ll get some calls from people whose primary motivation is lowering an inflated energy bill and luckily for us, that segment of the market is growing. Utility rates are likely to continue to rise as well. But most of the time – the vast majority of the time – we get the job because someone in the house is uncomfortable AND tired of paying for it.

As soon as we start trying to sell energy efficiency, someone asks the dreaded question: what’s the payback? But they never ask about the payback on the en suite bathroom, fancy kitchen, plasma screen TV, cozy new couch or wall-to-wall carpet. They make those purchases because they improve their comfort and convenience.

They don’t expect a payback. They don’t ask the sales clerk at the furniture store to whip out a computer and start modeling the savings they can expect on the new couch versus the old couch. They don’t care! They’re willing to pay almost anything! It’s more comfortable!

I’ve talked a lot in previous columns about finding the customer’s pain. Unfortunately there is no category for ‘comfort’ in the Yellow Pages™. Best we can do isSo, therefore, let’s try to think of every section to which a homeowner might turn to with a comfort problem and place an ad in all of them with COMFORT in big, bold type. When we build websites we need to make sure people searching for answers to their comfort problems on Google or Yahoo can find us too.

Now, where does energy efficiency fit into the sales pitch? It’s the rational justification, of course! A home performance retrofit is not alwaysrarely a cheap proposition, and it doesn’t have the same boast-to-your-friends aspect for most people as, say a new kitchen might. For the most part it’s invisible to the naked eye. For some reason, that can make it hard for some folks to understand what it is, exactly, that they’re buying with their dollar.

It has been said that the buying decision is an emotional one, and then the mind looks for a rational reason to justify the emotional decision that was made. Being able to justify the investment in their family’s comfort as “energy savings” makes a lot ofmost people feel better about the expense. That’s where the energy savings can help you close a deal. Be careful about getting too geeked-out about it, though. We all love our software – and we love to show our diagnostic toys to other people. Some homeowners want to see the energy modeling and really get into it. Most find the infrared camera fascinating. Others don’t have the time or inclination to get into that much detail. For them, just knowing that they can recoup their investment through energy savings in two years (or three, or four, or whatever) is enough to make them sign on the dotted line.

It’s easy to confuse and intimidate them with too much of the wizardry. Yes, we have a responsibility to educate the consumer about what we do and why it works. But we can keep it relatively high level unless they indicate they want more rationale and explanation. They don’t need to know about the physics behind air leakage, for example. They just need the logic-based basics: Sealing air leaks = no more drafts. Sealing air leaks = conditioned air stays inside. Sealing air leaks = comfort + energy savings. The exception might be the engineers, the technicians, and the bean-counters. They will let you know when it’s appropriate to go there, and you should be ready to explain the details if needed.

When For the rest, if we keep it simple and concentrate on selling comfort, we succeed more often. Stick to the basics and solve the customer’s pain, whatever it may be.
