BPI Signs MOU with EEM to Expand Market for Building Science Principles (BSP) Certificate to Real Estate Community

Malta, NY, August 12, 2013 - Today the Building Performance Institute, Inc. (BPI), the nation's premier home performance credentialing, quality assurance and standards setting organization, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Energy Efficiency Management, Inc. (EEM), a recognized industry leader in California providing green real estate training and exam services, to expand the market for BPI's Building Science Principles (BSP) Certificate of Knowledge to the real estate community. The organizations will work together to improve the building science education of real estate professionals, with the goal of increasing the number and value of green and energy efficient existing homes.

Under the agreement, EEM will conduct a limited pilot program in California to develop a market-based training program that prepares real estate professionals for BPI's BSP exam. Designed for Realtors®, real estate agents, appraisers, lenders and home inspectors, earning the credential will provide a basic understanding of building science and how energy upgraded homes present opportunities to boost sales. During the pilot, the two organizations will test a new designation: the Building Science Principles - Real Estate Professional (BSP-REP). The new designation may be complemented by EEM's Certified Green Real Estate Professional® (CG-REP®) certification designation, currently being offered throughout California.

"BPI created the BSP certificate for people who need to know how homes work but don't need the hands-on technical skills required of BPI certified professionals," said Larry Zarker, BPI CEO. "You may be a home inspector who needs to identify potential building performance problems in homes. Or you may be an appraiser or financial officer who needs to value green features of a home. Perhaps you're a Realtor who wants to be able to find, understand and market homes with sustainable features. Earning the BSP-REP proves you have the knowledge necessary to carry out your work effectively."

"This agreement is important for everyone in the real estate professions, reaching out across silos to a wide range of professionals and programs by working together and sharing information, for creating green and energy efficient existing homes, both here in California and nationwide. It establishes the framework for real estate professionals to obtain credible and meaningful educational tools and a credential that is both convenient to obtain and utilize in their existing business model on a daily basis," said President John Shipman.

The MOU focuses on increasing and expanding the new BSP-REP certificate in California initially. Upon completion and evaluation of the pilot results, the BSP-REP may be launched throughout the nation. EEM eventually plans to expand training programs throughout California and nationally to support BPI Test Centers in development of their own BSP-REP training. The pilot program will take place during 2013-2014.

The BSP-REP certificate is earned by passing a 100-question online exam that verifies a basic knowledge of building science. The companion Reference Guide helps prepare candidates to understand how various systems of the home interact to maximize energy efficiency, enhance building durability, and protect occupant comfort, health and safety. Candidates will understand the relationship between the building envelope, heating, A/C, insulation, mechanical ventilation, lighting, appliances and other systems of the home. The BSP certificate requires no hands on training.
